Monthly Archives: February 2014

A PSA and promise from me to you:

Well, from me and almost every other receptionist out there.

And maybe this isn’t to you, because you are all wonderfully sweet people and don’t need to be told this, but just in case:

Be kind to the person who answers the phone when you call into a company, office, or government building. I understand sometimes life is frustrating and you really need help. Or you think you are the only one to ever have a specific problem. Or you’re having an emergency. (In this case, please hang up and call the authorities!)

Be Kind

I understand that your problems are important. Your call is important to me, too. I promise, really. And I will do my absolute best to help you or get you quickly to someone who can. If you call me asking about something that no one in my building does, I will do my best to find you the number of the right person to call. Heck, if you call asking for the number to Home Depot, I’ll look that up for you. (I mean, I’d rather you not call City Hall for that, but I’ll do what I can. I’ve done it before.)

I promise to you that I am doing my best. I promise that everyone in City Hall really is working to make this city run as smoothly as possible, but it’s a big city and sometimes we can’t fix every single thing. But if you call, we will try. Hard.

So if and when you call, please be kind to the person answering the phone. Speak to them with the kindness you would extend to a friend. If you call and immediately begin to curse at me or yell at me, it doesn’t feel good. I’ll still help you if I can, but it really doesn’t help your situation, or mine.

I promise I do not control the snow. The storms that come are not my fault. If I could make it sunny year-round I would, but unfortunately that’s not something I, or the mayor, has control over.

I promise I did not make that cop ticket your car while it was illegally parked. That’s his JOB.

I promise I will do my best, if you will please do yours.

Finally Friday! What do you want to be when you grow up?

Is it just me, or has this week seemed to last FOR.EV.ER? I think it had something to do with having to get up at 4am to be at work extra early to work the State of the City breakfast. The event went really well and the mayor even cracked a couple jokes about the snow storms and Tupac (respectfully, of course). You can check it out on my instagram here!

Today, however, I am all caught up on sleep (woo!), I’m wearing a dress at work and my hair is down. Those things all have made for a pretty great day! Now I’m just waiting on 5 o’clock and I’m going with a friend to tour a condo that she’s considering buying. Then, it’s date night with the boy! This weekend is for getting finishing touches for my new apartment (even though I don’t move in for a couple weeks) and relaxing and catching up on bad TV.

I had a conversation with my boss earlier about how I am made to do and be more than a receptionist. Even though this job requires a bachelor’s degree and being able to speak Spanish, it’s not quite what I want to do for the rest of my life. Note: I am 100% grateful to have this job and I actually enjoy doing it. The people I work with are amazing and my superiors and quite inspiring. I am learning a lot about so many things and this job is allowing my to continue moving forward with my life. At the same time, it’s not my passion and, while wonderful, is something that I will be moving on from in a few years at most.

Which got me to thinking- what do I want to be when I grow up?

when i grow up

When I was younger I went through wanting to be a few different things:

  • Nurse (this lasted through my first semester of college- Biology killed that dream!)
  • Teacher
  • Veterinarian
  • Artist (HA! My art skills are sad.)
  • Singer
  • Princess (a girl can dream)
  • Psychologist
  • Flight Attendant

I was a bit of a mixed bag. My college major was Public Health, and I have experience as a teacher.

Now I’m a receptionist for the Mayor.

What happened? Now I just want to be paid for travel (yep, I’m looking into it) and get my master’s in social work so I can work with high needs children.

Getting to my new goal is going to be an adventure in itself and I’m anxious to see where life takes me in these next few years. My boss was encouraging in talking to me about grad school so it’s exciting to know that my job will be okay with me working toward moving on.

In the meantime, I’ll be the best receptionist/ translator I can be!

What did/do you want to be when you grow up?

Weekly Wishes!

Another week has flown by around these parts, thanks mostly to the ice storm we had that gave us a nice weekend in the middle of the week. We worked Monday and Friday last week and that’s it! The rest of the week was spent taking long walks/ skates on the ice, snuggling my friend Megan’s puppy, and cooking just about ALL the food ever. Because why not?

On to my goals, last week’s wishes were to:

1. Pull off a successful surprise for my boyfriend’s birthday. Done! The snow made it so we couldn’t go, but I told him what was going to happen and we rescheduled to do it in a couple weeks.

2. Get in a few good workouts despite the big storm we’re supposed to be having this week! Did it! One workout I’m counting is moving all my furniture things into storage until I move next month. They were just taking up too much space and lifting all that gave me a good arm workout!

3. Figure out my banking status. Finally taken care of! Got a brand new bank and saving plan in order!

I feel pretty accomplished for last week! Now onto this week’s wishes. I hope to:

1. Budget! I got a little crazy this weekend buying bedding for my new apartment and getting excited about having money again from fixing my bank. This week I need to work on controlling my spending so I can put more into savings!

2. Catch up with friends. Is it bad that I need to make this a conscious goal? Probably, but it’s needed. I’ve been so back and forth and running around with life lately and I need to take a minute and spend time with people who really matter.

3. Get to bed earlier. For those of you who know me in real life this probably sounds silly because I got to bed at like 10 or 10:30, which is already early for a lot of people. I got behind on sleep this weekend though catching up on Revenge, and I need it for work!

My goals are pretty simple for this week but I feel like they’re super important. What are your goals for the week? Need some encouragement? Link up with us through Weekly Wishes!

Oops! I messed up my blog.

I’m doing a little maintenance around here. Including changing my URL. Somehow I did it but most of my WordPress profile and things are still connected to the old one.

I don’t know how to fix it quite yet so bare with me for a little bit while I fix things!

Sorry!

Weekly Wishes!

candy heartsLast week I made my Monthly Goals so this week I’ll jump right into this weeks wishes!

1. Pull off a successful surprise for my boyfriend’s birthday. It’s the day before Valentine’s Day and I’m TERRIBLE with secrets because I physically do not know how to lie. So far I’ve been doing good and I just have to make it to Thursday before I spill the beans.!

2. Get in a few good workouts despite the big storm we’re supposed to be having this week! Hopefully we don’t get all snowed in again, but they’re saying we’re about to.

3. Figure out my banking status. Because of suspected fraudulent activity my bank put a hold on my account and cancelled my card. I super appreciate that they are looking out for my money, but they didn’t tell me that they were doing that so I was left at the Target check out line trying to figure out why I couldn’t use my card. We mostly got it figured out but I have yet to get a new card. I’m hoping that comes in this week so I can have money again!

5 reasons why Flappy Bird is SO. DARN. ADDICTING.

Something’s come over my office. It’s been making us all less productive and less social. It’s been simultaneously uniting us and tearing us apart.

Not an illness, not a tragedy. It’s…. Flappy Bird.

Yes, that really is my pathetically low score.

Yes, that really is my pathetic high score.

The annoyingly low-tech app that has seemed to spread like wildfire lately. It spread though my office in a matter of hours and has had all of us college-educated working professionals cursing like teenagers and fearing phone calls coming our way that will interrupt game play. Now, we aren’t an office to be slacking, and our work is all still getting done, of course, but it’s at the mercy of a little flappy bird. It seems so childish but it’s oh-so-satisfying.

Now, 5 reasons that I think this game has become so popular:

1. It’s easy. All you do is tap the screen to make the bird fly through the (Mario-esque) pipes. Seriously. That’s it.

2. But it’s really, really hard. You try again and again to make it past 1 just to nose-dive and die at 2. And then you want to play again because you have to make it past 3. But then there’s the promise of 5…

3. It never ends. Even those who are really good at it (aka my boss, who holds the high score record in our office) you can still always do better! There is no reward for getting to a certain score- just a certain death and having to start all over again.

4. You don’t have to buy anything, ever. There’s no buying new levels or shiny coins that make your bird fly better or get rid of some pipes. Other than the adds at the top of the game that kind of just sit there out of the way, there’s nothing that you can buy to make you better.

5. It makes you mad, frustrated, and determined. Nothing like some good old fashioned competition against yourself to get your blood pumping. Every time that bird falls to the ground because he why-can’t-he-just-fly-himself-dangit?! You get more and more sure that you NEED to pass that level. And so it begins, all over again.

Have you gotten into the Flappy Bird craze? Is it something that should have been left in high school? What’s your high score?

The Expat Diaries | Packing Woes

Expat Diaries

Today, I’m linking up with The Expat Diaries! This link up is done once a month and is a place for travelers to share stories about their time abroad. It can be travel tips, photos, awkward moments, whatever!

Even though I’m no longer living abroad, (darn) sometimes living 2,500 miles from home feels like being abroad.  I’m going to share one of the less glamorous parts of living and traveling abroad or for long periods of time. Packing.

Oh, Packing. One of the least thought about and yet most frustrating parts of travel.

Over the years, I’ve pretty much named myself as a master packer. I can make everything I own fit into my car, everything for a year fit into a 50 pound suitcase, and month’s worth of clothing fit into a carry on bag. Like magic.

I’m also a chronic over-packer. The question of “what if I need this?” is always at the back of my mind. Did I really need my hair straightener in India? Nope. Do I need more than one nice dress any time I’m abroad? Not at all. However, knowing how to pack effectively means that sometimes I can slide the straightener into the edge of my suitcase and fold that dress into the bottom of my purse.

Let me share 5 of my best packing tips with you!

  1. Roll those clothes! Rolling them makes clothes take up less space. If you have space bags, use those too! They are super helpful for making more things fit. You can also use gallon Ziploc bags to put clothes in and then squeeze the air out and seal them! They work great!
  2. For your flight: Baby/face wipes are a must have! They can be used to clean things or freshen up your face and body when you’ve been on a plane for hours. You’d be amazed at how much better you’ll feel with a clean face!
Note- For your ziplock bag of liquids- lotion, eye drops, contact solution (if you wear them) hand sanitizer. Tried and true needed things.
  3. Check the baggage rules in EVERY country you will be stopping in. Even if your plane is just touching down somewhere make sure you check the limits. You don’t want to get stuck halfway to your destination having to pay hundreds of dollars to get your bags the rest of the way there! It will suck, and you will cry.
  4. You need less shoes than you think you do. I promise. Take a couple of pairs out of your bag and you’ll still be fine.
  5. Don’t be afraid to wash your clothes on your trip! Learn to hand wash your clothes in a bathtub or sink and you won’t need to bring as much.

What are your best travel tips? How do you make sure you don’t over pack or under pack? How do you make it fit?

Weekly Wishes & February Goals!

February Wishes

February already! Wow! This year is already flying by and I am totally okay with that! I am really enjoying this year so far and taking it all in as it comes. This is such a weird time in my life with tons of changes and choices, and I’m honestly enjoying being able to figure things out and seeing where life takes me.

So for this month, my goals are to:

1) Buy a planner and get everything planned out. I’ve always been the kind of girl who uses a paper planner to make sure things are organized, and this past month without one has felt a bit hectic. Once I can write down my thoughts and plans and lists again I think I’ll feel better in general.

2) Do more reading. Life lately has seemed to hectic to sit down and have time to myself to read. Yes, even with a couple days off because of the storm I felt like I had to be doing something with the people around me rather than taking some me time.

3) Paint my kitchen table and chairs! I want to get this done this month so that when the time comes I can just move it right in.

4) Memorize the city council members and offices of the Mayor. Y’all, this is one of the most difficult tasks of my job so far. I know who the council members are when I hear their names but am having trouble listing them out. And there are 15 offices under the Mayor’s office. FIFTEEN. This is going to be where my study skills from college come in.

So there we have it! Bring it on, February!
